The Talbot Hotel | Oundle, Northamptonshire


The hotel originally dates from the 7th Century AD and its oldest building is clearly medieval in design albeit with a modified 16th century gallery, complete with original graffiti dating back to the 1700s etched into its windows. The hotel is famous for its New Street and inner courtyard facades, which were built with stone from Fotheringhay Castle in 1630. The stone mullion windows and timber staircase overlooking the inner courtyard are reputedly, also from Fotheringhay Castle. The staircase is believed to be that which Mary Queen of Scots famously descended on route to her execution at the castle on 8 February 1587.

The Eatery at the Talbot is so named because it offers a comprehensive but not overwhelming, menu available not only in the main garden restaurant, in the bar or School room but is also available alfresco in the courtyard or garden. The restaurant has one AA Rosette for an experience “that stands out in its local area“.

The Coffee House, with its fully stocked patisserie unit, offers a true high street coffee experience. The difference is the period ambience as you take a sofa in the glass house or a seat on one of our varied internal and external areas.

The White Hart Royal Hotel | Moreton in Marsh, Cotswolds

The Royal Oak Hotel is a Grade II listed building which began its life in the 18th century, however parts of it are much older. There is a chimney stack in the hotel which features stone from an abbey that once stood in Pool Quay in Elizabethan times.

Originally The hotel lay in the grounds of nearby Powis Castle. During its existence for centuries this grandiose Georgian building has welcomed many travellers through its doors. During our time as a coaching inn on the main route to the welsh coast of Wales, the Hotel saw its current function suite used as a stables with its own Ostler (someone who looks after horses). Notably, in 2010, The Royal Oak Hotel pleasure of welcoming one of the most prestigious guests from anywhere in the world, Her Majesty the Queen, when she visited Welshpool to open its new indoor cattle market and to have lunch at The Royal Oak Hotel.

Today’s building dates from 1642, the date marked on the southern gable, and the year in which the Civil War began. It was originally built of oolitic limestone and slates of Colleyweston stone.
